Ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata) is a common weed, known also as English plantain, narrowleaf plantain, ribleaf and lamb's tongue. It is a common weed of cultivated land, and here is growing in a well-kept cemetery. Like poppies, ribwort plantain grows readily on disturbed soil. The flowers of plantain are small, brown, and clustered on a long flowerhead. Their most noticeable feature is the creamy-white anthers that are held away from the flowers on long filaments. Shown here are two flowerheads on separate stems, with one growing behind the other. Another common indicator of disturbed ground is the presence of poppies: .
