WHO says that it is estimated that ETEC causes about 220 million diarrhoea episodes globally, with about 75 million episodes in children under 5 years of age, resulting in between 18 700 and 42 000 deaths in children younger than 5 years. Several vaccines are in the pipeline.\nETEC is also a very common cause of traveler's diarrhea, this infection is usually self limiting, with no need for antibiotics. ETEC is common in developing countries.
The plant roots under the microscope
Squash preparation of onion root tip cells stained to reveal chromosomes, Bright field illumination, light microscopy. This image was taken with the X40 objective lens. Depth of focus is extremely low at this magnification. Smaller apertures give greater depth of focus, but image quality deteriorates and resolution is greatly reduced. The aperture in this image was optimised for contrast and resolution. Chromatic abberation is inevitable in light microscopy, but has been kept to a minimum in this image.

Serratia Marcescens is a rare Nosocomial Pathogen.\nThis bacterium is a gram-negative bacillus found in soil and water. it produces a red pigment at room temperature. It can cause urinary and respiratory infections, endocarditis, osteomyelitis, septicemia, wound infections, eye infections, and meningitis.

Aspergillus fumigatus is one of the most common Aspergillus species to cause disease in individuals with an immunodeficiency. This pathogen primarily causes invasive infection in the lung.

Microscopic image of a freshwater copepod. Gets it common name cyclops from the single red eyespot. Live specimen. Wet mount, 10X, transmitted brightfield illumination. Note - motion blur of live animal, very shallow depth of field, chromatic aberration and uneven focus are inherent in light microscopy.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is responsible for causing severe acute bacterial infections like pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis. Distinguishing it from other alpha-hemolytic streptococci is achievable by assessing its susceptibility to optochin (shown in the pic), as indicated in the accompanying image. Notably, the pneumococcal polysaccharide capsule plays a crucial role in evading phagocytosis, contributing to its pathogenicity.
