White-tailed kites are extremely beautiful birds of prey that have a unique system of feeding the family. After the male hunts for a small rodent, like pictured here, it transfers the prey mid-air to the mother so she can feed their offspring. I captured this scene moments before the intriguing transfer process took place. The male with prey in its talons seems to be training its young to get used to this transfer. The two, young-colored kites follow along as the dad prepares to give the mouse away to the family.
