It was established in 1966, when the area was declared a national historical landmark of Azerbaijan in an attempt to preserve the prehistoric rock carvings, mud volcanoes and musical stones in the region.\n\nGobustan State Historical and Cultural Reserve acquired national status in 2006, and Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007. As of 2011, the Petroglyph Museum functions in the reserve.

Driekopseiland (Island) is a rock engraving site located in the bed of the Riet River near Plooysburg, close to Kimberley, Northern Cape, South Africa. At this site, nearly 4,000 exposed individual engravings are carved into glaciated basement rock. It is estimated that the petroglyphs were probably engraved in two distinct periods, the first about 2500 years ago, and the latter more or less 1000 years ago. The engravings at Driekopseiland are associated with cultural rituals and more specifically with puberty rites,

My first spectacular view of The Great Gallery at sunset. This single panel is approximately 200 feet long with dozens of images. The panel is believed to be thousands of years old and was created during the late archaic period. It contains one of the finest displays and best preserved of prehistoric Indian rock art in the United States. Located in a detached unit of Canyonlands National Park in Utah, this area was added to the park in 1971 to protect this amazing collection of rock art.
