Bath - Gymnasium\nThe Building History\n\nThe cultural tradition of public bathing originated in the\nClassical Greek world. in the cities of the Hellenistic\nkingdoms public baths became standardı catering to the\nmental and physical well-being of the population.\nBy the middle of the 2nd century BCE, another tradition\nof public bathing consolidated in Roman İtaly. Bathers\nvisited a sequence of bathing rooms with different\ntemperatures. The Romans also improved the indirect\nheating technology of floors and walls.\nOne of the public bathing facilities of Sagalassos was\nsituated on a slope or hilltop to the east of the Lower\nAgora. The original building was constructed during the\nsecond quarter of the 1st century CE. It featured three\nrectangular spaces in a row, which were possibly vaulted\nand ended on an apsis at the southern end. The original\nconfiguration could have featured a courtyard at the\nother Side.\n\nFrom 120 CE onwards, the remains of the first building\nwere incorporated in a newly conceived, large-scale\nbath-gymnasium complex, following architectural\nmodels typical for Asia Minor. Vaulted spaces were built\naround the hilltop in order to enlarge the building\nsurface. The bathing rooms were laid out on this terrace,\nwith the heated rooms over a suspended floor.\nThe core of the building was constructed with mortared\nbrick. The outer walls received a monumental Shell of\nlimestone ashlars.\n\nThe interior decoration was very spectacular with walls\nand floors cladded with marble in many colours,\nmosaics and a collection of statuary.\nAs the building suffered from the internal üşe of heat\nand water, it saw many interventions, with a major\nrenovation in Late Antiquity.\n\nIn the course of the 6th century CE, however, parts of\nthe majestic bath-gymnasium were abandoned, and the\nempty rooms were stripped of all re-usable materials.\nFinally, the damage caused by the 7th century CE\nearthquake put the facility beyond use.
