The human settlements carved into the rock in the Murgia Materana Archeological Park near the town of Matera, in southern Italy, known worldwide as 'Sassi' (Matera's Stones). The ancient city of Matera, in the region of Basilicata, is one of the oldest urban settlements in the world, with a human presence that dates back to more than 9,000 years ago, in the Paleolithic period. The Matera settlement stands on two rocky limestone hills called 'Sassi' (Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano), where the first human communities lived in the caves of the area. The rock cavities have served over the centuries as a primitive dwelling, foundations and material for the construction of houses, roads and beautiful churches, making Matera a unique city in the world. The Sassi of Matera are two neighborhoods of Matera, Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano, consisting of buildings and cave dwellings carved into the rock of the Murgia Materana. Together with the Civita district (built on the spur separating the two Sassi), they form the historic center of the city of Matera. In 1993, they were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
