A special tribunal (or pie powder court) meted out justice for serious crimes at this spot, the last hanging being on 3 February 1820 when busking bagpipe player Duncan Livingstone was convicted of killing his 10-year-old assistant. The justice tree was variously known as the grief tree, gallows tree or just 'the tree'. Livingstone's body was interred beneath Rochester Castle's walls.

Most of the killings were committed by two Hutu militias, the Interahamwe, and the Impuzamugambi.
Part of an inscription around a monument with the anchor of a ship, HMS Sirrus, which arrived in Sydney Harbour as part of the First Fleet on 26 January 1788.  The anchor is displayed as a monument in Macquarie Place in the central business district of Sydney.  The commemoration of the formation of modern Australia is 26 January and a national holiday. London, England - April 25, 2011: New Zealand Canterbury Province plaque in Whitehall, London. In March 1848 the Canterbury Association met and planned the English settlement organised by John Robert Godley, who had led a preliminary group of settlers there in April of 1850. The first wave of 750 settlers arrived at Lyttleton Harbour on the 16th December 1850 in a fleet of four ships. Canterbury Province itself was formed in 1853: the Provincial Government was abolished in 1876. The capital of the Province of Canterbury was Christchurch.
