Close up of one of the Caen Hill lock mechanisms near Devizes, in Wiltshire. This stretch of the Kennet and Avon canal has the longest continuous run of locks in the UK, totalling 29 locks over two miles. The Caen Hill Locks have 16 individual locks along one of the steepest stretches of waterway. Work on the canal started in 1718 and was opened in 1810, having had its final route completed by surveyor John Rennie. The canal provided the main transportation route for goods travelling up and down the 87 mile long canal running between Bristol and Reading in the south of England.
