Aerial view Great Barrier Reef from sky out of air plane in Australia
An interesting reef: At five metres, large patches of branching Acropora and a three metre Turbinaria peltata colony were encountered. Hard coral cover averaged 60%, soft corals 22%, turf algae and sponges less than 1%, crustose coralline algae 18%. Table Acropora colonies exceed three metres in size.\nThe coral lesion repair was moderate, and both overgrowth of damaged portions of coral colonies and reorientation in growth plane of toppled corals were high.\n\nA large Table Acropora Coral dominates the scenery with some Isopora Corals around. \n\nMany fish species are in the background. \n\nBui Island, Indonesia\n5°5'13.77 S 131°55'36.654 E at 8m depth

Next to Tayandu Island there are Karangs, shallow areas that reach a few meters below the surface. They are full of life. Table Acropora exceeded three metres in size here, reaching up to four metres.\nThis colony was badly damaged. Damage happens often by mix of storms, earthquakes and destructive fishing practices. \nThis colony has a good overgrowth of dead portions, a high lesion repair. The white edges are the growth zones.\nIn 2023, when this photo was taken, the stress resistance, recovery, and overall reef health and resilience potentials of this coral community were all high.\nKarang Huisman, Tayandu Island, Indonesia, \n5°28'41.72 S 132°13'21.31 E at 11m depth

Streaked Spinefoot Siganus javus occurs in the tropical Indopacific Ocean from the Persian Gulf to southern China, Australia to Vanuata and New Caledonia in a depth range from 0-20m, max. length 53cm, common 30cm. The common name Rabbitfish is given by the similarity of the nose. \nThe species occurs in small schools of as many as ten individuals feeding on benthic algae. The streaked spinefoot has grooves in the spines of the dorsal, anal and pelvic fins which contain venom glands. The wound caused by these spines may be relatively painful to humans but is usually not dangerous. The spines are used in self-defense. Rabbitfish venom is similar to venom of stonefish. Siganus javus, sold as fresh fish, is caught using nets and fixed traps. \nThis specimen was encountered at 12m depth in the Triton Bay, Indonesia, 3°53'36.5662 S 134°6'21.5963 E
Curio Bay is of international significance for its Petrified Forest dating back to the Jurassic period. The tree fossils you see here, similar to Kauri and Matai, are approximately 170 million years old. The forest was alive when New Zealand was part of Gondwanaland.
