A handsome, carefree evergreen shrub with dense, spineless, thread leaf foliage on an upright, bushy form. The soft, narrow, dark green leaflets create a fern-like appearance. Bright yellow flower spikes appear in fall, followed by purple-blue berries. Use as a filler in borders and beds or as an accent.

The Atala butterfly (Eumaeus atala) and its five closest relatives in the genus Eumaeus like to display their toxicity. This sextet's toxicity comes from what they eat as caterpillars: plants called cycads that have been around since before dinosaurs roamed the Earth and contain a potent liver toxin called cycasin.

Plant is popular in butterfly gardens.\nOther common names include bloodflower or blood flower, cotton bush, hierba de la cucaracha, Mexican butterfly weed, redhead, scarlet milkweed, and wild ipecacuanha.
Saururus chinensis, commonly called Asian lizard’s tail, has attractive, green foliage with white splotches on the leaves at the top of the plant. It is native to wetlands, including water gardens, meadows, marshes, ditches, swampy forested areas, fields and roadsides in East Asia. Minute, spicily fragrant, white to yellowish-white flowers bloom in early to mid-summer (June-August). Each flower spike resembles the tail of a lizard, hence the common name.
