Kahikatea (Dacrycarpus dacrydioides) is a coniferous tree endemic to New Zealand. It is distinguishable by it's twisted truck. For Maori, the Kahikatea had many uses; from an important food source, to the strong wood being used for spears, to the ash being use in the ritual of Te Moko, the Maori tattoo.
