An ancient market cross, or wayside cross, on the Green in the Norfolk village of Castle Rising in eastern England. It has an octagonal base and is a scheduled ancient monument, dating from the 15th century.

Old wooden stocks and whipping post in the village of Ufford in Suffolk, Eastern England. Of course, these are not the originals but it is known that there were stocks and a whipping post in Ufford in 1680. The use of stocks was outlawed in 1837 but whipping posts were not abolished until 1948. Stocks (which restrained only the feet) and whipping posts were used for crimes such as drunkenness, petty theft, disobedience (servants), Sabbath breaking, gambling, vagrancy, wife beating - and even travelling musicians and fortune tellers could find themselves chained in the stocks and being pelted with unsavoury items!

Unlike gallows which were used to execute people, gibbets were used to display the body as a warning to others. Caxton gibbet is on a small knoll on Ermine Street near Caxton in Cambridgeshire. It was first used in the 1670’s. The last recorded use was 1753 when Mr Gatward hung there for over three months, until a high wind blew him down.

Holt, England - May 22, 2012: People near the war memorial in Holt, Norfolk. Holt is an ancient market town, mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and near the once-thriving ports of Cley and Blakeney. Much of the medieval town was destroyed in a fire in 1708 but it still retains a peaceful, old-fashioned quality thanks to the proliferation of attractive Georgian buildings constructed after the fire. It has a good variety of shops and a famous public school, Greshams, founded by Sir John Gresham in 1555. The Old School House, on the right, is now the schools pre-preparatory department, for a hundred boys aged three to eight years old.
