Giotto's magnificent frescoes on the side walls inside the Basilica Superiore di San Francesco (Upper Basilica of Saint Francis), in the heart of medieval Assisi, Umbria, central Italy. The famous painter Giotto painted this series of grandiose frescoes between 1292 and 1305, depicting the Stories of Saint Francis with the most significant episodes of the life of the Saint of the Poor from his vocation to his death. The image refers to the view of the nave towards the transept of the Basilica, with the high altar in the centre and the large stained glass windows of the apse in the background. Built in Italian Gothic style starting in 1228 and completed in 1253, the Basilica has housed the mortal remains of the Saint since 1230, preserved in a crypt. The church was designed by Maestro Jacopo Tedesco and is composed of the Basilica Inferiore (Lower Basilica) and the Basilica Superiore (Upper Basilica). Famous for being the birthplace of Saint Francis and Saint Clare, Assisi and the spirituality of its sacred places have become over the centuries a symbol of peace, a point of reference for tolerance and solidarity among peoples and among the world's different faiths. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the high quality of the olive oil produced in these lands. Since 2000, the Basilica and the other Franciscan places in Assisi have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Image in high definition quality.

The apse, the presbytery and the main crucifix inside the Basilica di Santa Chiara (Basilica of Saint Clare), in the medieval heart of Assisi, in Umbria, central Italy. Built in the Gothic style between 1257 and 1265, this basilica preserves in its crypt the mortal remains of Saint Clare and is the seat of the Order of Saint Clare. In the photo: The hanging main crucifix is the work of the Master of Santa Chiara, an artist of the late thirteenth century, while the frescoes in the vault are attributed to the Expressionist Master of Santa Chiara, an artist instead a follower of Giotto, datable to around 1337. On the left wall is a panel attributed to the Master of Santa Chiara with Saint Clare and eight stories from her life (1283). On the right wall is a panel with the Madonna and Child (1265), also attributed to the Master of Santa Chiara. Famous for being the birthplace of Saint Francis and Saint Clare, Assisi and the spirituality of its sacred places have become over the centuries a symbol of peace, a point of reference for tolerance and solidarity among peoples and among the world's different faiths. Above the door is a large and ornate rose window in which most of the decorative details are in the Romanesque style, surrounded by sculptures with the symbols of the Four Evangelists.
