The Red Sea is a rich and diverse ecosystem. More than 1200 species of fish have been recorded in the Red Sea, and around 10% of these are found nowhere else. This also includes 42 species of deepwater fish. The rich diversity is in part due to the 2,000 km (1,240 mi) of coral reef extending along its coastline; these fringing reefs are 5000–7000 years old and are largely formed of stony acropora and porites corals. The reefs form platforms and sometimes lagoons along the coast and occasional other features such as cylinders (such as the Blue Hole (Red Sea) at Dahab). These coastal reefs are also visited by pelagic species of Red Sea fish, including some of the 44 species of shark.

While the upper plateau of the famous Blue Corner reef at a depth of 10m hardly has any large corals (the storms are too strong at this exposed point), larger coral formations can survive at 17m. They offer shelter to several fish species. Blotcheye Solderfishes Myripristis berndti occurs in the Indo-Pacific and the Eastern Pacific in a depth range from 3 to 160m, feeds mainly on plankton such as crab larvae. Max. length 30cm, common 22cm. Common Bluestripe Snapper Lutjanus kasmira occurs throughout most of the Indo-Pacific region in a depth range from 2-265m, common length 25cm, max. 40cm. In daytime, this species forms nearly stationary schools and feeds individually by night on crustaceans and fishes. Blue Corner, Palau 7°8'3.65 N 134°13'10.52 E at 17m depth.

$Panda Butterflyfish Chaetodon adiergastos occurs in the tropical Western Pacific from the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan to the Philippines, Java, Indonesia and northwestern Australia in coral reefs in pairs or groups, usually near soft coral in a depth range from 1-30m, max. length 20cm. The species feeds on corals, crabs, worms, and other invertebrates. Mature individuals form pairs during breeding. \nThere is one intruder in the school: A Raccoon Butterflyfish Chaetodon lunula. \nThere are more fish species to see: some Threespot Dascyllus Dascyllus trimaculatus, an Orangelined Triggerfish Balistapus undulatus, a Lined Bristletooth Ctenochaetus striatus, some young and an adult Moonwrasses Thalassoma lunare, and a lot more like Fusilierfishes, Anthias and Damselfishes. \nThis school of Panda Butterflyfishes was encountered in Tengah Island, Indonesia, 5°8'28.938 S 132°0'57.606 E at 5m depth$
