Dead trees in the geothermal landscape of Norris Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. The mineral-rich hot springs have created a stark and surreal environment where trees stand bare against a bright blue sky. A powerful symbol of geology, climate, and nature’s raw forces, perfect for global buyers seeking unique science and travel imagery.

Lower Falls at Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
Mammoth Hot Springs, yellow stone, US
This dramatic geological feature stretching about 20 miles long and reaching depths of up to 1,200 feet is carved by the Yellowstone River. It was first officially documented during the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition of 1870. The expedition was led by Henry D. Washburn, Nathaniel P. Langford, and Gustavus C. Doane.

A dead tree on the white mineral ground of a geothermal area in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. The stark contrast between the lifeless wood and the mineral-rich barren land highlights themes of survival, climate change, and the power of nature. A conceptual and striking landscape perfect for both travel and creative use.
Yellowstone River
Waterfall and canyon in the Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA
Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA: the travertine pools of Palette Spring in Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park, are formed by hot, calcium-rich water emerging from underground sources. As the water cools and releases carbon dioxide at the surface, calcium carbonate precipitates, building terraces and rimstone pools. These pools display striking colors—white, yellow, and orange—caused by thermophilic microorganisms and mineral deposits. Constant fluctuations in water flow, temperature, and chemistry reshape the formations over time.

Vibrant mineral deposits cover the ground in this geothermal area of Yellowstone National Park. Steam rises from vents, showcasing the park's active geology under a clear sky.
Colorful walls of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Springtime. The colors in the canyon are a result of hydrothermal alteration. The rhyolite in the canyon contains a variety of different iron compounds. Exposure to the elements caused the rocks to change colors. The colors indicate the presence or absence of water in the individual iron compounds. Most of the yellows in the canyon are the result of iron present in the rock.

Rhyolite is a type of extrusive igneous rock characterised by its light color, high silica content, and fine-grained texture. It forms from the rapid cooling of magma on the Earth's surface and is often associated with volcanic eruptions. Rhyolite is rich in silica (SiO₂), typically containing more than 70% silica. It is composed mainly of quartz and feldspar, with minerals like biotite, hornblende, and pumice often present.
