White Sands National Park covers 145,762 acres in the Tularosa Basin of the American Southwest. The white dunes, largest of their kind on earth, are made up of gypsum sand dissolved from the surrounding mountains and carried into the basin almost 12,000 years ago. In 1933 President Herbert Hoover designated the area as a national monument. It became a national park in 2019. The White Sands desert is located in Tularosa Basin New Mexico.

In the vast desert area of New Mexico in the White Sands National Park area, blooming soap weed yuccas are a wonderful sight. The area is in the Tularosa basin area with San Andres Mountains to the West and Sacramento Mountains to the East. Drifts in the the dunes can be 10' to 60' high. The dunes are a magical and unusual place in the Southwest. The wind-created ripples create a stunning visual of shadows of light and dark. As day light shifts into evening there is a stillness and a pastel glow of light on the sand and yuccas.
