Mycelium (plural mycelia) is a root-like structure of a fungus consisting of a mass of branching, thread-like hyphae
Tree fungi, such as the tinder fungus, grow on trees and have ecological and historical uses, such as the production of tinder for fire-starting and medical purposes
Mushrooms: Panellus Stipticus - Mycenaceae

The Polyporaceae are a family of poroid fungi belonging to the Basidiomycota. Often called Tinder mushroom.\nPolyporaceae is a family of fungi so named because their fertile surface takes the form of a layer of tubes, the mouths of which can be seen as 'pores' underneath the cap or shelf of the fungus. This family of fungi was named and described in 1838 by Elias Magnus, although August Corda beat him to the publication of this name.

A thick growth of greenshield lichen on a rock. The leaf-like lobes proclaim this a foliose lichen. Lichens are interesting, often beautiful, life forms. They cover 7% of the earth's surface. Though they undergo photosynthesis, they are not plants. They are composite organisms in which algae and fungi live symbiotically. The three main types are foliose, fruticose and crustose. Lichens are indicators of environmental quality, and they do no harm to the natural substrates on which they grow.

Distribution, America and Europe (source R. Phillips).\n\nThis is a beautiful Wood Fungus on dead Wood of Beech ( Fagus sylvatica) and Birch (Betula pendula).
