At Hanoi’s Temple of Literature, the statues that look like dogs are Nghê, traditional Vietnamese mythical guardian animals. They’re closely related to the Kỳ Lân (often translated as “unicorn” in English), which in East Asian culture is a composite creature—not a horse with a horn. Nghê are typically dog-like and symbolize wisdom, morality, loyalty, and protection, making them especially appropriate for Confucian sites of learning. So they look like dogs, get called “unicorns” in translation, and both descriptions are culturally correct.

Hue, Vietnam: the ceramic roofs of the Hall of Thái Hòa (Throne Hall) in the Imperial City of Hue, are an example of Nguyen dynasty architecture. Built in 1805 and restored several times. the roof ridges and eaves are richly decorated with intricate ceramic mosaics depicting dragons, phoenixes, and floral motifs, crafted from broken porcelain and glass. This elaborate ornamentation not only displays fine craftsmanship but also reflects the hall’s ceremonial importance as the site of imperial coronations and official receptions.

This image showcases an exquisitely detailed wooden carving of a dragon, a symbol of power, strength, and good fortune in many cultures. The dragon is depicted with a fierce expression, its body coiled in a dynamic pose that conveys movement and energy. The carving is rich in texture, with each scale and feather-like appendage meticulously rendered to create a lifelike representation. The warm, golden-brown tones of the wood enhance the depth and dimensionality of the carving, highlighting the artist's skill in manipulating the material to bring the dragon to life. This piece likely serves both a decorative and a symbolic purpose, embodying cultural heritage and the reverence for mythical creatures. It may be part of a larger architectural structure or a standalone piece intended for contemplation and admiration of the artisan's work.
