The variegated lizardfish (Synodus variegatus), also known as the reef lizardfish or sand lizardfish, lies motionless on coral substrate in the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. This ambush predator is commonly seen resting on rubble and coral outcrops, blending with its surroundings while awaiting small fish or invertebrate prey.

Hexagrammos lagocephalus is a colorful marine fish with the common name rock greenling in the greenling family. It is sometimes known as fringed greenling and erroneously as the red rock trout.

Variegated Lizardfish Synodus variegatus occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian, Line, Marquesan, and Ducie islands, north to the Ryukyu Islands, south to the Lord Howe, Kermadec and Rapa islands in a depth range from 0 to 121m, max. length 40cm, common 30cm. Usually the Variegated Lizardfish prefers to rest on hard surfaces and frequently occurs in pairs. Adults are variable from grey to red. The species occurs in deep lagoon and seaward reefs, feeding on small fishes by seizing these from passing schools, also shrimps.
