A female Varied Thrush is perched on a pine tree branch during winter in north Idaho.

Small bird, its average size is 21.5 to 28.5 cm (males) and 22 to 25 cm (females). It weighs between 110 and 285 g (males) and between 150 and 265 g (females). It has a round head, without plumes and the eyes are arranged side by side, in the same plane. The eyebrows are white and the eyes are yellow. The coloration is earthy, mimetic, and may present plumage in rusty tones caused by purple earth soils (adventitious coloration). Unlike most owls, the male is slightly larger than the female and females are normally darker than males, particularly on the face. It has a smooth and silent flight. The white-browed robin-chat (Cossypha heuglini), also known as Heuglin's robin, is a species of bird in the family Muscicapidae. Found in east, central and southern Africa, its natural habitats include riverine forest and thickets, and it is also found near humans. The IUCN classifies it as a least-concern species.
