On April 16, 1998 it was the first building to open up as part of the modern architectural complex called City of Arts and Sciences, an entertainment-based cultural and architectural complex. The Opera bulding of Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia can be seen next to the planetarium. All buildings in the complex were designed by the Valencia-born and internationally known architect Santiago Calatrava.

People walking across and under Alameda Bridge in Valencia. Spanning 130 metres (426 feet), this bridge was built between 1991-1995 by Santiago Calatrava. It joins the university area with the old town and is known as the bridge of the exhibition (also 'de la Peineta' owing to the arch shape). Alameda refers to the Metro station below the bridge, while 'exhibition' refers to the Valencian Regional Exhibition (1909). The original footbridge was destroyed by the devastating flood of 1957. Although painted white, the bridge is made of high resistance steel.
