Nearly a thousand years ago natives inhabited the plains between the Painted Desert and the San Francisco Peaks of Arizona. In an area so dry it would seem impossible to live, they built pueblos, harvested rainwater, grew crops and raised families. Today the remnants of their villages dot the landscape. Citadel Mesa Pueblo is in Wupatki National Monument, established in 1924 to preserve this rich heritage. Wupatki National Monument is near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.

From the perspective of a drone, the Mojave Desert sprawls out beneath, a tapestry of ochre hues and rugged terrain. Endless waves of sand dunes ripple across the landscape, interrupted only by sporadic clusters of resilient shrubs and cacti. The vastness of the desert stretches to the horizon, where distant mountains stand sentinel against the clear blue sky. In this expansive and barren wilderness, the drone captures the raw beauty and solitude of the Mojave, a timeless landscape shaped by the forces of nature.

Between 900AD and 1200AD native people inhabited the Painted Desert east of the San Francisco Peaks of Arizona. In an area so dry it would seem impossible to live, they built pueblos, harvested rainwater, grew crops and raised families. Their way of life was the key to survival in this harsh landscape. These people survived here, farming one of the warmest and driest places on the Colorado Plateau. They developed the skills to farm the land and endure hardship in an area where many would not. These ancestral Puebloan people used petrified wood not only for tools but also as a building material. Located on top of a small hill, this structure was built almost entirely of petrified wood and sealed with mud mortar. These thought-provoking remains bring to mind the innovativeness in building and the environmental challenges faced by these indigenous peoples. Based on nearby similar buildings, this pueblo was most likely part of a much larger community of \

Two Guns is an early 1900’s ghost town in Northern Arizona. It’s not a commercialized tourist site and doesn’t get as many visitors as other ghost towns. People come to wander through the abandoned structures, look and wonder what went on here back in the day. Legends have been written about the town, none of which are likely to be true. One involves a standoff and massacre between the Navajos and Apaches. Another tells about the search for the famous outlaw Billy the Kid. It is mostly a place of rustic stone buildings, all of which are crumbling. Two Guns, on the edge of Canyon Diablo, was supposedly named after one of the early settlers, a crotchety old guy who called himself Two Gun Miller. The community of Two Guns developed after the Santa Fe Highway was established and a bridge was built over Canyon Diablo in 1915. In 1926 the highway became part of U.S. Route 66, turning Two Guns into a tourist destination. In its day, Two Guns had a gas station, restaurant, campground, swimming pool, lodging and even a zoo. Over the years, buildings burned, businesses closed and finally the fate of the small community was sealed by the construction of Interstate Highway 40 which bypassed Two Guns to the north. Eventually Two Guns became a ghost town. In 1988 the Canyon Diablo Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Two Guns is located west of Winslow, Arizona, USA.
