Gnarled Wood Grain in a Tree Hollow Resembling a Face

The Major Oak in Nottingham forest is thought to be over 800 years old. It is thought to weigh 23 tonnes and has a circumference of 33 feet. It has been voted Britain’s favourite tree. In 1790, Major Hayman Rooke, well known antiquarian from Mansfield Woodhouse, included the tree in his book about the ancient oaks of Sherwood. Therefore it became known as The Major‘s Oak, and later simply The Major Oak. Regular maintenance work is carried out on the tree to keep it as healthy as possible. Legend has it that this is tree that was used as a hideout by Robin Hood. These new Autumn shots of the tree were a pleasure to take. The Autumn sunshine has done it justice!
