Flesh bright sulphur-yellow. Taste mealy, smell strongly of gas-tar. Gills bright sulphur-yellow. Spore print white. Spores 9–12 x 5–6um. Habitat in deciduous woods, less frequently with conifers. Hymenogastraceae, Its most famous species is Hypholoma fasciculare. The hemispherical cap can reach 6 cm diameter. It is smooth and sulphur yellow with an orange-brown centre and whitish margin. The crowded gills are initially yellow but darken to a distinctive green colour as the blackish spores develop on the yellow flesh. It has a purple brown spore print. The stipe is up to 10 cm tall and 1 cm wide, light yellow, orange-brown below, often with an indistinct ring zone coloured dark by the spores. The taste is very bitter, though not bitter when cooked, but still poisonous.

$Ischnoderma benzoicum (Wahl.) Karst. Fruit body annual; no stem, broadly attached, or with a small stem-like attachment. Bracket up to 15cm across, 12cm wide, 3cm thick at base, semicircular, with a thick rounded or lobed margin; at first fleshy and exuding resin, then hard and brittle; upper surface ochre to rusty brown to blackish; finely felty and fairly smooth, becoming concentrically zoned and ridged and wrinkled with a glossy black resinous crust. Hyphal structure dimitic; clamps present. Habitat singly or occasionally overlapping on logs and stumps of hardwoods. Found in Europe and throughout North America. Season September-October.
