As part of the Amazon rainforest, Cristalino Rainforest Reserve is an extremely important area for its biodiversity, and exceptional number of species, making it one of the richest places to observe birds, mammals, butterflies and orchids in primary forest. The Amazon itself is home to more plant and animal species than any other terrestrial ecosystem, containing approx. 30% of the world’s species. Its biodiversity is astounding, with a single bush may contain more species of ants than the entire UK, with a single hectare of forest containing more than 480 tree species. The rainforest reserve covers 12,000 hectares, on the southern edge of the Amazon Basin. Cristalino River is connected to other protected areas, thereby forming a huge conservation corridor in the Southern Amazon.
Subterranean Termite Mud Tubes. These earthen tunnels are constructed by termite using soil, wood particles, and their saliva to create a protected pathway between their underground colony.
Zau Evua, Zaire Province, Angola: Cubitermes sp. epigeal nest / hill / mount - Cubitermitinae are an Afrotropical subfamily of higher termites. The outer shell of the nest is thick and durable, serving as a protective barrier against predators, environmental elements, and intruders. It also helps to regulate the internal temperature and humidity. Cubitermes termites build nests with one or more caps used to shield the nest against rainfall, giving them a characteristic mushroom shape.

Zau Evua, Zaire Province, Angola: Cubitermes sp. hill interior - Cubitermitinae are an Afrotropical subfamily of higher termites - The interior of Cubitermes sp. nests is a highly organized and protective structure, featuring a thick outer shell that shields the colony from predators and environmental extremes. At the core lies the royal chamber, housing the queen and king, surrounded by nursery chambers where eggs and nymphs are carefully tended by workers. The nests also include specialized fungus gardens for digesting cellulose, storage chambers for food, and a sophisticated ventilation system that regulates temperature and humidity. Additionally, defensive chambers are strategically placed near the outer walls, allowing soldier termites to guard the colony, while waste is disposed of in isolated areas to maintain hygiene.

I saw many anthills while I was sitting in a car in Ethiopia. The tallest one could be more than 2m high. Anthills are typically made of soil, sand, or other materials by ants or termites.
