Sequoia Cone

There are three kinds of trees known as redwoods. They are the coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) and the giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) of California; and the dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) from China. Quite which of these redwood species has made it to Mitcham in Surrey, England, I am not sure. Below: more redwood trees growing in England.

The fruits of Cupressus sempervirens (cypress) are small, woody cones, called strobili, which contain seeds. These cones are greenish-gray when immature and take on a woody, grayish-brown appearance as they mature. Cone maturation occurs in the second year, and the seeds ripen inside. Copy Space
