St Botolph’s Priory in Colchester, Essex, Eastern England, was founded around 1093 and housed Augustinian canons until its dissolution in 1536. It was constructed using flint and reused Roman bricks which were locally readily available thanks to the town’s earlier occupation as a Roman settlement. The Priory was built in typical Norman style with thick circular pillars, round arches and a highly decorative West Front, of which this image shows part. The Priory was badly damaged in 1648 during the siege of Colchester in the Civil War.

Malmesbury Abbey, dedicated to St Peter & St Paul since the 7th Century AD. On a hilltop site, Malmesbury was once marked by an iron age fort and later became one of the most significant towns in England,. Situated on the River Avon, it features the Abbey, now over one thousand years old and other quaint and distinctive architecture that maps the centuries.

Leiston Abbey is an impressive monastic ruins and has some extraordinary architectural features. The abbey, established in 1182, moved to this location in the 14th century. Some of the old abbey building materials were used which is why the new abbey has some Norman features. The ruins are on the outskirts of the Suffolk village Leiston, England.

An elevated view of the ruins of the gatehouse at Castle Acre Castle and over to the Nar Valley in the ancient village of Castle Acre in Norfolk, Eastern England, on a sunny day in September. The motte-and-bailey castle was built by order of William de Warenne during the 1070s near the junction of the River Nar and Peddars Way. Very little is left of the castle now but the village also contains the ruins of a Cluniac Priory and an imposing Bailey Gate, so there is much of interest to see in this now small village, which was once a fortified town.
