![Saint-Tropez (pronounced [sɛ̃ tʁɔ.pe]) is a French commune located in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, capital of the canton of Saint-Tropez.\n\nFrom the corsair city dominated by its 16th century citadel to the fishing village at the start of the 20th century, the first town liberated during the landings in Provence became, from the 1950s, an internationally known seaside resort on the Var Côte d'Azur thanks to the craze of New Wave artists, then yéyés and finally, a resort for the European and American jet set as well as tourists in search of Provençal authenticity or celebrities.\n\nLocation of Saint-Tropez in its peninsula.\nSaint-Tropez is located in the South-East of France, on the south-eastern coast of the Var, on the peninsula of Saint-Tropez which closes the gulf of the same name. The town is part of a crescent around the bay of Canebiers, on the entire peninsula, which can be encompassed in a rectangle of six kilometers by four.\n\nThe commune occupies an area of one thousand one hundred and eighteen hectares and its territory is almost completely occupied by properties built on large plots, giving it a relatively preserved environmental appearance. However, concentrations of constructions appear around the old village, on the coast, in particular between the capes Saint-Pierre and Saint-Tropez and between the cape Pinet and the long beach of Pampelonne. ![Saint-Tropez (French pronunciation: [sɛ̃ tʁɔpe]; Occitan: Sant Tropetz, pronounced [san(t) tʀuˈpes]; US: /ˌsæn troʊˈpeɪ/ SAN-troh-PAY)[4] is a commune in the Var department and the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Southern France. It is 68 kilometres (42 miles) west of Nice and 100 kilometres (62 miles) east of Marseille, on the French Riviera, of which it is one of the best-known towns. In 2018, Saint-Tropez had a population of 4,103. The adjacent narrow body of water is the Gulf of Saint-Tropez (French: Golfe de Saint-Tropez), stretching to Sainte-Maxime to the north under the Massif des Maures.\n\nSaint-Tropez was a military stronghold and fishing village until the beginning of the 20th century. It was the first town on its coast to be liberated during World War II as part of Operation Dragoon. After the war, it became an internationally known seaside resort, renowned principally because of the influx of artists of the French New Wave in cinema and the Yé-yé movement in music.
