Bears can move as quietly as cats, and in lush woods they're hard to see. You could turn around and see one standing there. This one started huffing and puffing, but went away when the photographer raised his voice. Speaking aggressively to a bear, however, can backfire. This photographer watches out for smaller, younger bears in particular, since they may not have yet learned to avoid people.
