Charleston Navy Yard, Charleston, Massachusetts, USA - October 26, 2009: The National Park Service maintains this historic decommissioned shipyard. Here is an example of a mid 20th century safety sign from the cold war era. It warned workers at the Charlestown Navy Yard (across the river from Boston) what could happen without proper safety shoes. It urged workers to wear safety shoes and avoid the painful fate of this pictured worker. Caricature humor conveyed the important injury prevention message. The nearby Bunker Hill Monument, another Charleston attraction, is visible through a missing panel.
