Siena. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta or simply put Siena Cathedral is an inside as well as outside exquisitely decorated medieval church. A beautiful example of Italian Gothic architecture. My picture shows the upper part of the ornately decorated facade. Particular striking are the three mosaics depicting the Presentation of Mary, the Coronation of the Virgin and the Nativity of Jesus. The lower part of the facade was made of white and pink marble by the sculptor and architect Giovanni Pisano between 1284 and 1297, while the upper part is the work of the sculptor Camaino di Crescentino, built between 1299 and 1317. Inside, the Sienese cathedral preserves countless artistic masterpieces created by Nicola Pisano and his son Giovanni, Michelangelo Buonarroti, the Pinturicchio, Donatello, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone Martini. Siena Cathedral, located in the province of Siena in Tuscany, Italy. The city's inner city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, because it contains buildings dating back to the 13th and 14th century. In the city are also horse races twice a year on Piazza del Campo. The Roman Catholic cathedral was completed in 1263. An addition to the cathedral started construction in the 1300's, but it was halted by the Black Death, this addition was never finished.
