South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens) is a robust, thicknecked eared seal that forms dense breeding and resting colonies on rocky coasts and open beaches along both Atlantic and Pacific shores of South America. Adult males are much larger than females and develop a massive head with a manelike ruff of coarse fur, while both sexes show external ear flaps, long foreflippers and a variable brown to yellowish coat, hauling out on rocks, gravel or sand to rest, breed and raise pups between foraging trips in productive coastal waters over the continental shelf.
