$Thorny Seahorse Hippocampus histrix occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from South Africa to French Polynesia, north to Japan and south to Australia, but not in the Red Sea. The stationary species occurs at a depth of 0 to 82m, usually from 15 to 40m, max. length 17cm.\nHippocampus histrix is a rare inhabitant of shallow sheltered reefs, found among clumps of algae or in seagrass beds and associated with sponges and sea-squirts. Large adults are pelagic and probably associated with drifting debris. \nThe species feeds on zooplanktons and small crustaceans. The male carries the eggs in a brood pouch which is found under the tail. The use in traditional Chinese medicine is increasing with the rise in patent medicines.
