The F-4, a two-seat all-weather twin-engine supersonic fighter, was originally designed by the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation. The F-4 was first entered into service by the US Navy (USN) in 1960, but was later flown by the Air Force (USAF) and US Marines (USMC), where it established itself as the predominant aircraft type in the 1960s. Designed as a pure air superiority fighter, it was also adapted for other roles in the course of its service, such as a fighter-bomber or reconnaissance aircraft.
