Chiusdino, Italy - February 8, 2020: The Abbey of Saint Galgano was a Cistercian Monastery found in the valley of the river Merse between the towns of Chiusdino and Monticiano, in the province of Siena, region of Tuscany, Italy. Presently, the roofless walls of the Gothic style 13th-century Abbey church still stand. Nearby are the chapel or Eremo or Rotonda di Montesiepi (1185), the tomb of Saint Galgano and the purported site of his death in 1181, the sword said to have been planted in the ground by Galgano and a chapel with frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti. The magnificent Benedictine Abbey of Sant'Antimo stands serenely amid the verdant Tuscan landscape, its distinctive bell tower and honey-colored stone walls surrounded by elegant cypress trees and sprawling vineyards. This historic monastic complex near Montalcino presents a timeless scene against the backdrop of rolling hills, embodying the perfect harmony between spiritual heritage and the natural beauty of the Italian countryside.

The Abbey of San Galgano is a monastic complex in Chiusdino (Siena), while the Hermitage of Montesiepi is a smaller place of worship on the nearby hill, built to house the sword of San Galgano stuck in the rock. The Hermitage was built over the hut where the saint spent the last year of his life and contains the legendary sword, while the roofless Abbey was built by Cistercian monks.
