Beautiful landscape of the Wachau Valley in Austria.

The Wachau is the landscape in and around the Danube valley between Melk and Krems an der Donau in Lower Austria, about 80 kilometers west of the federal capital Vienna. In 2000 it was added to the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List as the Wachau Cultural Landscape with the Melk and Göttweig Abbeys and the old town of Krems.

Dürnstein seen during a cruise on the Danube. This very picturesque small town on the Danube river is famous for having been the place of imprisonment of the King of England Richard the Lion-heart, imprisoned in the castle whose ruins are visible in the photo above right. The town in the Lower Austria state is also one of the most visited tourist destinations of the Wachau, a region well-known for its wine growing area along the Danube river and inscribed in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites since December 2000.

A woman with a red umbrella is going up towards the Burgruine Hinterhaus, a ruined castle dating back to 1243, situated on a rocky outcrop not far from the town of Spitz. The castle overlooks the river Danube and from the the ruin you can enjoy a breathtaking panorama toward the river and the vineyards of the Wachau, a region in the Lower Austria well-known for its wine growing area.

Details of the ghost town (or rather ghost village) Anavatos in the mountains of the Greek Island of Chios in the Aegean Sea in winterr (late December) in black and white. Anavatos (Greek: Ανάβατος) is a medieval, now abandoned, village located 16 km north-west of Chios Town. The village was established in the Byzantine era, probably by workers of the nearby Monastery of Nea Moni. Above the village stands a medieval fortress. The village was abandoned after the Turkish massacre in 1822 and the devastating earth quake in 1881.The image was captured on old-fashioned black and white grainy ISO 400 film by an analogue 35 mm film camera. The granularity is real film grain (due to the presence of small particles of a metallic silver on the negative). Minimal post processing has been done (only adjustment of histogram). The image is part of a series of abandoned and partly ruined houses (ghost towns) in Greece.
