Hignose snake on a high key background
Photo showing an Indian snake charmer performing on the pathway leading to Amer Fort in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. Snake charmers are popular with tourists in India, with this photo of an angry Indian cobra snake (venomous naja naja, not to be confused with a spitting king cobra) dancing in a wicker basket, while the Hindu musician man plays his musical instrument flute (pungi). Tourists often don’t realise that snake charming in this way is cruel, with the snake’s fangs often being removed and the mouth sewn up, meaning that the tongue can’t even come out and the reptile eventually dies of starvation. However, it remains popular as it had done over the centuries for maharajahs and foreign tourists throughout India, especially North India.
