Between 1100AD and 1200AD native people inhabited the plains between the Painted Desert and the San Francisco Peaks of Arizona. In an area so dry it would seem impossible to live, they built pueblos, harvested rainwater, grew crops and raised families. Their way of life was the key to survival in this harsh landscape. These people survived here, farming one of the warmest and driest places on the Colorado Plateau. They developed the skills to farm the land and endure hardship in an area where many would not. Today the remnants of their villages dot the landscape. This Pueblo dwelling is on East Mesa in Wupatki National Monument. The monument, established in 1924 to preserve this rich heritage, is near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.

Petrified wood is formed when dead trees are buried by layers of sediment. The logs soak up groundwater and silica from volcanic ash and over time are crystallized into quartz. Petrified Forest

The petrified tree trunks in the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona of the southwestern USA. A famous tourist destination, the National Park featuring a vast area of an ancient forest with scattering of giant petrified trees against a arid desert landscape, a dramatic natural scene and beautiful landscape.

Volcanic rock stacked atop existing boulders form an exterior cliff dwelling wall that runs along the side of of a high desert promentory. The Sinagua Indian tribe that selected this site did so for its easily defensible position. Below the wall is a sheer cliff dropping to a long steep hill that descends to a dry riverbed - allowing no access from that side. This wall includes small portals where rocks were omitted so that arrows could be fired through them, permitting concealment from enemy attack. The wall has contains a narrow opening for egress, and the climb to safe level terrain is difficult. Site selection was critical for the Sinagua, and perfectly executed here. This culture combined hunting and gathering with agriculture, but the latter was challenging in this arrid wilderness terrain. The exact site location, which requires considerable effort to reach, is intentionally omitted. Its estimated age dates to 1300 AD - 1400 AD. Set on the point in Mossel Bay are rows of rocky reefs which form a natural tidal pool. For generations the towns children have learned to swim in this pool where chains and ropes have been secured across the pool to assist swimmers when the surging tides cause strong currents to wash down the pool. Blougat (Blue Hole) lies at the upper end of the tidal pool and is a much deeper pool than the first, this giving its deep blue colour and thus its name. There is a diving board over the pool with high rocks on the seaward side and it is here in this pool that the local children have learnt to dive to this day.
