It is located in the Cape Peninsula, near Simons Town towards Cape Point, near Cape Town in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is also commonly known as Boulders Bay. It is a popular tourist stop because of the rookery of African Penguins which settled there in 1982. They are an endangered species. Boulders Beach forms part of the Table Mountain National Park. African penguin (Spheniscus demersus), also known as Cape penguin, South African penguin, black-footed penguin or jackass penguin, is a species of penguin confined to southern African waters. Like all extant penguins, it is also a flightless bird with a streamlined body and wings stiffened and flattened into flippers for a marine habitat. It has distinctive pink patches of skin above the eyes and a black facial mask. Body's upper parts are black and sharply delineated from the white underparts, which are spotted and marked with a black band. They are pursuit divers and feed primarily on fish and squid. The name jackass is due to the species' loud, donkey-like noise. They are found along the coast of South Africa and Namibia.
