Nottingham castle sits on an outcrop of rock called 'Castle Rock'. The origins of the castle date back to William the Conqueror in 1067, when a wooden castle was built. through the middle ages it was fortified and modified. It acted as a royal fortress and a royal residence. In 1649 it was demolished but rebuilt by Charles II. A royal mansion was built at the top of the castle's high ground, but this was later burned down by rioters in 1831. the castle is now a museum and a famous landmark of Nottingham. The famous Robin Hood statue was given to the city by Philip E F Clay and unveiled in 1952. Robin Hood was a popular Nottingham folk person in the medieval period, who was known for robbing the rich and giving to the poor. Many contemporary films have been made about him.

The castle is built on a high piece of ground called castle rock. It dates back to 1067 when the first structure was built on the site by Norman the Conqueror. Since then the castle was re-built of stone and used by various kings throughout the ages. It was destroyed after the execution of Charles I, but restored by Charles II in 1660. The central Ducal Mansion that was built in the 1670's was burned down in a riot in 1832. This was later restored in 1875 and remains to this day a museum.
