Slope Point is the southernmost point of New Zealand's South Island. Beyond this lies just the cold southern ocean and eventually Antarctica. These trees were planted many years ago as shelter from the fierce southern winds and have been consistently blasted from the south ever since, causing them to twist and bend into the shape you see today. Nowadays only sheep live here, but underneath the trees you can just make out an old wooden building, built behind the trees for shelter from the wind.

A lone tree grows on the top of a rock in Tinline Bay in the Abel Tasman National Park on the South Island of New Zealand. This bay is along the Abel Tasman Coast track, about 2 km from the start of the track in Marahau. At high tide the tree is surrounded by water.
