Christmas Island National Park: Ficus microcarpa, commonly known as the Chinese banyan or Indian laurel fig, is a strangling fig tree native to tropical and subtropical regions including Christmas Island, where it is abundant in primary forests on the plateau and in exposed rocky situations. This species can grow up to 25 meters tall, often starting as an epiphyte on host trees or as a rock-splitter on cliff faces, eventually enveloping and killing its host with extensive aerial roots. On Christmas Island, its fruits are consumed by numerous bird species, and cliffs dominated by F. microcarpa serve as nesting sites for local avifauna, contributing to the island's biodiversity alongside another native fig, Ficus saxophila.
