North rocky coastline

Nuuk / Godthåb, Sermersooq, Greenland: coastline in the Myggedalen (Mosquito Valley) area - metamorphosed igneous rock - ancient metamorphic banding within Archean Orthogneiss, some of the oldest rock on Earth (2.8–3.8 billion years). Part of the North Atlantic Craton, these formations feature alternating bands of light felsic minerals (quartz, feldspar) and dark mafic minerals (biotite, hornblende). Their steep, near-vertical orientation is the result of immense tectonic deformation and plastic folding that occurred billions of years ago. When ancient continental plates collided, the crust was subjected to extreme heat and pressure, compressing these layers into tight, upright folds that now stand exposed at the water's edge.
