Freezing rain is a type of precipitation that falls as liquid rain but freezes upon contact with cold surfaces, forming a layer of ice. This phenomenon occurs when a warm layer of air is sandwiched between two layers of cold air in the atmosphere. As precipitation falls, it melts into rain in the warm layer, then passes through the cold layer near the ground, where it becomes supercooled—liquid but below freezing point. When this supercooled rain contacts surfaces, it instantly freezes, creating a slick and often hazardous layer of ice on roads, sidewalks, trees, and power lines.
