$The meadow brown (Maniola jurtina) is a butterfly found in the Palearctic realm. Its range includes Europe south of 62°N, Russia eastwards to the Urals, Asia Minor, Iraq, Iran, North Africa and the Canary Islands. The larvae feed on grasses.\n\nThe meadow brown is a medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan of 40–50 mm. The upperside of the male is brown with a single orange spot on each forewing. The upperside of the female is more variable, but is usually brown with two or three orange spots on each forewing. The underside of both sexes is brown with a series of black spots.\n\nThe meadow brown is a common butterfly and can be found in a variety of habitats, including meadows, heaths, and woodlands. The adults fly from May to September.\n\nThe larvae of the meadow brown feed on grasses, including common bent (Agrostis capillaris), meadow foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis), and red fescue (Festuca rubra). The larvae overwinter and pupate in the spring.\n\nThe meadow brown is a relatively unthreatened species. However, it is declining in some areas due to habitat loss and fragmentation.$
