Plaza de España is a large landscaped square in the city of Madrid located in the Argüelles neighbourhood, at the south-eastern end of the Moncloa-Aravaca district. In its centre is a monumental fountain dedicated to Miguel de Cervantes. It acts as a connecting axis between Gran Vía and Calle de la Princesa. Until shortly before the construction of Gran Vía, this square was called Plaza de San Marcial. Among the surrounding buildings, the Torre de Madrid and the Edificio España stand out for their height, as well as examples of Madrid modernism such as the Casa Gallardo and the Edificio de la Compañía Asturiana de Minas, currently the headquarters of the Regional Ministry of Culture.In addition to Gran Vía, the streets of Princesa, Leganitos, Bailén, Ferraz and Cuesta de San Vicente converge at the square. With an area of approximately 36,900 m², it is one of the largest squares in the country.
