Zebra Lionfish or Zebra Turkeyfish Dendrochirus zebra occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa to Samoa, north to southern Japan and the Ogasawara Islands, south to Australia and Lord Howe Island in a depth range from 0-115m, max. length 25cm. \nThis scorpionfish species has 13 venomous spines along its back, used to defend itself. Dendrochirus zebra has a habit of resting in places hidden from light such as under a rock or a piece of coral.\nZebra Lionfishes are not the solitary predators originally described. When hunting in groups, zebra lionfish herd their prey into a confined area using their venomous dorsal spines and flaring their fins to create a barrier. The Zebra Lionfish feeds on small crustaceans and fish, and is in turn preyed upon by groupers.\nThis specimen was encountered in the Lembeh Strait, Indonesia. \n1°27'15.486 N 125°13'25.578 E at 10m depth

Pterois miles in the marine aquarium of Gijon, Spain
Underwater image of one Lionfish aka Zebrafish (Pterois volitans). These fish have venom in their spiny spiky fins. They are a non aggressive species, often seen low on the coral reef. However if they are provoked they will use the venom to ward off attackers. Their red and white stripes are warning colours for the toxins (Aposematism). They are natural species to Asia however are invasive species in the Caribbean. Footage taken whilst scuba diving at Hin Bida, Andaman Sea, Krabi province, Thailand. Taken on Sony mirrorless camera with underwater housing and Inon Z330 strobe.

Pterois antennata, like many fish species, has very different common names like Broadbarred Firefish and Spotfin Lionfish. The species occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from East Africa to Marquesan and Mangaréva Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Queensland, Australia, Kermadec and Austral Islands in a depth range from 2-86m in lagoon and seaward reefs, hiding in crevices under rocks and coral formations during the day and hunting at night, feeding on shrimps and crabs, max. length 20cm. \nThis specimen is inbetween Whip Coral Ellisella sp. at the left and Black Coral at the right side. The outline of this fish is visually disturbed by the numerous spiny projections and fleshy tabs improving camouflage by mimicking the Banded Sea Urchin Echinothrix calamaris.\nTriton Bay, Kaimana Regency, West Papua Province, Indonesia, 3°53'24.4657 S 134°6'34.0173 E at 20m depth

The Common Lionfish Pterois volitans occurs in the tropical Pacific Ocean from Cocos-Keeling Islands and Western Australia in the eastern Indian Ocean to the Marquesas and Oeno (Pitcairn group), north to southern Japan and southern Korea, south to Lord Howe Island, northern New Zealand and the Austral Islands. The species inhabits lagoon and seaward reefs from turbid inshore areas in a depth range from 2-50 m. Often solitary, they hide in unexposed places at daytime often with head down and practically immobile, using the pattern for camouflage as a hunting skill. Juveniles are pelagic and expatriate over great distances. This is a main reason for the broad geographical range of this species. \nThe species has recently invaded Western Atlantic and Caribbean coral reefs, and may become one of the most ecologically harmful marine fish introductions to date. The dorsal fins are venomous, but it is a popular table fish. Max. length 46cm. This specimen is from Triton Bay, West Papua Province, Indonesia \n3°57'4.9417 S 134°8'1.0322 E at 9m depth
