On Elephant Island, Antarctica, a colony of penguins gathers around a bust of Chilean sea captain Luis Antonio Pardo Villalon. Captain Pardo, in his steam tug, the Yelcho, rescued 22 crew members of the Endurance, which became trapped in the Antarctic ice in January 1915 and sank after nine months. The rescued crew members had been left behind by their captain, Ernest Shackleton, who along with five crewmen risked an 800-mile open-boat voyage to South Georgia Island and its whaling station in a desperate attempt at survival. After arriving safely, Shackleton enlisted aid at three ports to rescue the crew left behind, but the ships were turned back each time by solid pack ice. Finally, Shackleton sailed with Pardo from Chile and successfully rescued the entire remaining crew. Amazingly, no one perished.

Port Lockroy is a former British military and research station on Goudier Island, Antarctica. Renovated and repurposed in 1996, the site now houses a museum and the most southerly operational post office in the world. The proceeds from the museum's souvenir shop, frequented by visitors in the austral summer, support research on the effect of tourism on penguins.

Thacher Island is a small island off Cape Ann on the Massachusetts coast in the United States. It is a part of the Town of Rockport.
