This process creates layered, stepped deposits that build up over time, preserving the shapes and structures of underlying microbial mats. These terraces, often described as gracefully contoured shoulders along the runoff streams, host communities of thermophilic bacteria and archaea that produce the spring's rainbow colors—ranging from orange and red carotenoids in warmer zones to green chlorophyll in cooler areas—through temperature-dependent pigmentation. The sinter encases successive generations of these heat-loving microorganisms, forming a geological record of ancient microbial life in this extreme hydrothermal environment, which has evolved over thousands of years.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, United States: Excelsior Geyser Crater, formerly known as Excelsior Geyser, is a dormant fountain-type geyser in the Midway Geyser Basin. It features a crater measuring approximately 276 by 328 feet with a typical temperature of 199°F (93°C) and discharges over 4,000 gallons of water per minute into the Firehole River. Named in 1871 by the Hayden Geological Survey, it exhibited frequent eruptions up to 300 feet high in the late 19th century, with the last major activity ending in 1890 after damaging its internal plumbing; brief minor eruptions occurred in 1985 and violent boiling was observed from 2004 to 2006, but it has since functioned solely as a constantly boiling hot spring with no recorded geyser activity through 2025 - Grand Prismatic Spring area.
