Jackson Lake, Teton County, Wyoming, USA: Jackson Lake, situated in Grand Teton National Park in northwestern Wyoming, is a natural glacial lake enlarged by the Jackson Lake Dam, spanning 15 miles in length and 7 miles in width with a surface area of 25,540 acres and a maximum depth of 438 feet, serving as a key reservoir for the Snake River and irrigation purposes in Idaho. The lake lies at the base of the Teton Range, a 40-mile-long north-south trending fault-block mountain range within the Rocky Mountains, formed 6 to 9 million years ago along the Teton Fault, with its northern section featuring prominent peaks like Mount Moran rising abruptly to elevations exceeding 12,000 feet above the lake's surface at 6,772 feet. This northern Teton area, characterized by ancient metamorphic and igneous rocks overlaid with sedimentary deposits, offers dramatic alpine scenery, with the lake's western shore remaining largely undeveloped for backcountry access while the eastern side provides roads, marinas, and lodges.
